Meet Shirley Butala, Solomon Islands

Shirley Butala is a 46-year-old mother of six from the Milestone community in Honiara, Solomon Islands. A hardworking and determined woman, she supported her family by running a small canteen stall, though limited stock and outdated equipment made it difficult to earn enough to cover daily needs and school expenses.
Her turning point came in 2022 when she joined SPBD Microfinance. Through SPBD’s business training, Shirley gained valuable skills in managing her finances and growing her enterprise. With her first loan, she purchased refrigeration equipment, expanded her stock, and built a new shop space under her home, transforming her modest stall into a proper retail store.
The improvements quickly attracted more customers, and her shop became a busy and trusted place for families in her community. As her income grew, Shirley was able to pay her children’s school fees, improve their living conditions, and provide greater stability for her household.
Today, Shirley is on her 5th loan cycle of SBD and operates a thriving retail business that supports her family and contributes to the local community. She has built a reputation for fair prices and reliable service, earning the trust of her customers.
Reflecting on her journey, Shirley says, “SPBD gave me more than financial help - it gave me
dignity, independence, and the courage to dream bigger.”
